Job Summary
The Head of Cardiac Anesthesia & ICU provides strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for the Cardiac Anesthesia and Intensive Care Unit. The role is responsible for ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, and evidence-based anesthesia and critical care services for cardiac surgical patients. The position will lead medical staff, establish clinical standards, drive quality improvement, and support the ongoing development of departmental services.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the Cardiac Anesthesia & ICU department and its clinical operations.
- Develop, implement, and maintain clinical protocols, guidelines, and standards of care.
- Provide advanced anesthesia care for adult cardiac surgical procedures.
- Oversee postoperative critical care management of cardiac surgery patients.
- Supervise and provide clinical leadership to consultants, specialists, and junior physicians.
- Participate in multidisciplinary patient assessment, treatment planning, and clinical decision-making.
- Ensure compliance with clinical governance, accreditation requirements, patient safety standards, and institutional policies.
- Monitor clinical quality indicators and lead departmental quality improvement initiatives.
- Support and participate in clinical research and evidence-based practice initiatives.
- Mentor, train, and develop medical staff to maintain high standards of clinical competence.
- Promote effective communication and collaboration between anesthesia, ICU, cardiac surgery, nursing, and other clinical departments.
- Support departmental planning, resource management, and service development.
- Lead emergency and complex clinical decision-making within the Cardiac Anesthesia and ICU environment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Medical Degree (MD or equivalent).
- Board Certification or Specialist Degree in Anesthesiology.
- Fellowship or advanced specialist training in Cardiac Anesthesia.
- Current medical license or eligibility for medical licensure.
Experience Required
- Minimum 10 years of post-specialization experience in Anesthesiology.
- Extensive experience in cardiac anesthesia.
- Significant experience managing critically ill cardiac patients in an ICU setting.
- Proven leadership or departmental management experience within Cardiac Anesthesia and/or Intensive Care.

Education
- Medical Degree (MD or equivalent).
- Specialist Degree/Board Certification in Anesthesiology.
- Fellowship or advanced training in Cardiac Anesthesia.
Required Certification(s)
- Current medical license or eligibility for licensure.
- Board Certification/Specialist qualification in Anesthesiology.
Preferred Certification(s)
- Fellowship or recognized advanced qualification in Cardiac Anesthesia.
- Additional critical care or ICU-related certification is an advantage.
