Abstract
Introduction
Current guidelines advise that anaphylactic shock refractory to traditional treatments may be managed with extracorporeal life support (ECLS), but reports have been exclusive to adults.
Case Report
We present the case of a 16-year-old female with respiratory failure secondary to peanut ingestion-induced anaphylactic shock who was swiftly and successfully managed with ECLS cannulation within 3 hours of anaphylaxis onset. After less than 36 hours of ECLS, the patient was decannulated and has fully recovered from a neurologic and cardiac standpoint.
Discussion
This case highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to rapid ECLS cannulation as well as the effectiveness and feasibility of ECLS in the management of anaphylactic shock in the pediatric population.
